Updated 15 September 2026. Defensive contributions — often shortened to DefCon — are now a meaningful FPL scoring route, and they become even more important in GW5 FPL Challenge because The Shield awards 10 points for reaching the threshold.
DefCon is useful because it rewards repeatable defensive work that does not depend on a clean sheet.
For normal FPL:
- Defenders need 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles to earn two points.
- Midfielders need 12 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions, tackles and recoveries to earn two points.

Early hit rate is not enough by itself. Three matches is a small sample, and players can change role, formation or minutes.
Why centre-backs can be valuable without clean sheets
Traditional FPL thinking asks: "Can this defender keep a clean sheet?"
DefCon adds a second question:
"How much defending will he actually have to do?"
A centre-back in a difficult fixture may face more crosses, direct attacks and penalty-box pressure. That can create extra clearances and blocks.
This does not mean bad fixtures are automatically good. Conceding goals still hurts clean-sheet upside. But DefCon can give certain defenders a points floor even when the clean sheet disappears.

The midfielder difference
Midfielders have a higher threshold — 12 rather than 10 — but recoveries count.
That makes players such as Stach, Janelt and Mainoo interesting because their value can come from ball-winning work rather than attacking returns alone.
For a normal FPL transfer, however, do not ignore attacking upside. A £5m–£6m midfielder who reaches DefCon but offers almost no shots or chances can still be worse than a similarly priced attacker.

Best GW5 DefCon fixtures and situations
Leeds vs Crystal Palace
Muharemovic and Stach have early DefCon evidence, while Palace also have defensive-action candidates. This fixture is especially relevant to GW5 Challenge.
Newcastle vs Hull
Hull defenders may face sustained pressure, which can create defensive actions. Egan's early total is notable.
In normal FPL, the fixture still favours Newcastle. In The Shield Challenge, the calculation is more nuanced.
Brentford vs Chelsea
Brentford's Janelt, Ajer and Sangare have all appeared among early threshold hitters.
Chelsea's attacking quality may increase Brentford's defensive workload, but managers still need to account for goals-conceded risk.
Man City vs Sunderland
Mukiele's early DefCon record is excellent, but City away is the extreme version of the trade-off: potentially huge defensive workload, but also significant risk of conceding.
DefCon versus attacking defenders
Jayden Bogle currently leads OneFPL's overall points standings and offers a different kind of defender profile: attacking upside on top of defensive scoring opportunities.
Managers should not automatically replace an attacking defender with a pure DefCon centre-back.
Use this hierarchy:
- Secure minutes.
- Role and attacking involvement.
- Clean-sheet probability.
- DefCon floor.
- Price and future fixtures.
If two defenders are similar on the first three, DefCon can become the tiebreaker.
How to use DefCon in FPL Challenge GW5
The Shield changes the weighting dramatically because reaching the threshold is worth 10 points.
That makes repeat threshold hitters central rather than supplementary.
A useful Challenge structure is to maximise defender exposure, include one ball-winning midfielder and use the forward slot for attacking ceiling.

What can make a DefCon pick fail?
Rotation: no threshold without minutes.
Role change: moving from centre-back into a lower-contact role can alter the action profile.
Game state: a team unexpectedly dominates possession and the defender simply has little defending to do.
Small sample: two threshold hits do not guarantee a season-long trend.
Injury: check Team News, especially during congested weeks.
