Best Free Hit Gameweeks in 2026/27: GW9, GW12 or later?
Updated 26 October 2026. The best Free Hit Gameweek is the one where you can score meaningfully more points than your normal starting XI, not simply the week with the most attractive green fixtures. The official Fantasy Premier League strategy guide mentions GW9 and GW12 as possible first-half windows.
The current 2026/27 rules give managers one Free Hit to use in each half of the season. Your first-half chip must be used before the GW19 deadline on Saturday 2 January 2027 and cannot be carried into the second half. That makes the next ten weeks an optimisation decision, not an unlimited waiting game.

If your squad contains three Liverpool players and three Arsenal players, GW9 is worth modelling carefully. But strong players can score in difficult fixtures, and some owners will have more urgent weaknesses elsewhere.

How to compare the windows fairly
- Estimate your normal GW9 starting XI after free transfers and an ordinary bench substitution.
- Build a possible Free Hit GW9 starting XI with realistic minutes and a captain.
- Subtract the normal XI estimate from the Free Hit estimate. This is a modelled one-week improvement, not a guaranteed gain.
- Ask whether GW12 or other future scenarios might produce a larger improvement for your specific squad.
- Consider your first-half chip inventory and what you still need to use before GW19.

Important 2026/27 chip rules
- Free Hit transfers last one Gameweek only. Your original squad returns afterwards.
- The chip cannot be cancelled after you confirm it.
- Only one chip may be active during a Gameweek.
- You have two Free Hits this season, one in each half; the first must be used before GW19.
- Official updated 2026/27 guidance says banked free transfers are retained on a Free Hit or Wildcard, unlike some archived advice written under older rules.

GW9 is worth playing only when your squad benefits enough. GW12 is another strong candidate for managers stacked with Arsenal and City assets. Do not automatically save for a distant Double Gameweek if that means losing your unused first-half chip.
