Historical Gameweek 8 archive (reviewed 26 October 2026). The GW8 deadline and all ten matches have passed. The original predictions below are kept as a dated record, not current transfer or injury advice. For GW9 availability, use current team news; for decisions use OneFPL Planner.
The best Saka replacements are not all the same type of transfer
Saka's early Champions League injury has created two different problems: replacing his possible points against Everton in GW8, and preserving a balanced midfield for GW9–GW12. These objectives can point to different players. The Premier League's earlier premium comparison favoured Palmer's fixture appeal, while the latest uncertainty changes the Saka side of that decision.
Replacement shortlist: who fits your team?
| Player | GW8 fixture | Why consider him | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cole Palmer (Chelsea) | Tottenham (H) | Established central attacking role, premium alternative | Final health and Chelsea attacking concentration |
| Bryan Mbeumo (Man Utd) | Bournemouth (H) | Direct attacking involvement, potentially saves budget | Role, latest team news, United chance creation |
| Morgan Rogers (Chelsea) | Tottenham (H) | Strong minutes case, flexible pricing | Already own Palmer or João Pedro? |
| Declan Rice (Arsenal) | Everton (H) | Arsenal exposure and set-piece/assist potential | Real attacking role vs defensive contributions |
| Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal) | Everton (H) | Creative central midfielder | Minutes and positioning after the Bayern match |
| Morgan Gibbs-White (Forest) | Ipswich (A) | Fitness-positive update and creative role | How rapidly he regains full match rhythm |
| Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth) | Man Utd (A) | More budget for other positions | Tougher immediate away match |
| Kevin Schade (Brentford) | Hull (A) | Attractive fixture if shoulder recovery complete | Starting status after recent return |

Latest FPL news
Route 1: Premium for premium — Palmer
Palmer is the cleanest positional answer when you can afford him. Chelsea host Spurs in GW8 and have no equivalent midweek European strain in the current situation. His strongest argument is involvement in chance creation, not merely the name recognition. The drawback is opportunity cost: buying Palmer can limit your next defender or forward upgrade. If you already own Rogers and João Pedro, three Chelsea attackers also makes your Gameweek outcome more correlated.
Route 2: Mid-price and reinvest — Mbeumo
Mbeumo gives a more balanced route for squads carrying thin defences or an injury elsewhere. United host Bournemouth in GW8. If moving from Saka creates spare money, do not assume you have to spend it immediately: simulate a second move next week in OneFPL Planner. The value of a downgrade comes from the full XI, not only the replacement's solo score.
Route 3: Short fixture punt — Gibbs-White or an Arsenal midfielder
Forest have confirmed Gibbs-White is available for the trip to Ipswich after training through the week. That improves the immediate case but does not guarantee a 90-minute return. Arsenal's Rice or Ødegaard preserve exposure to Everton at home, although neither replicates Saka's exact role. If you are planning to sell your short-term pick by GW9, include the cost of that future transfer in the decision.
Route 4: Budget shift — Tavernier or Schade
A cheaper midfielder can be correct even with a less attractive GW8 fixture when the saving lets you upgrade a weak defender or replace another unavailable starter. Schade's minutes after his shoulder issue deserve checking. Tavernier's role is attractive to monitor, but Bournemouth's GW8 away match at Manchester United is not the same immediate matchup as Chelsea's.
A transfer decision matrix
| Your squad situation | First choice of approach | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Own João Pedro and Rogers | Evaluate Mbeumo before third Chelsea attacker | Blindly tripling Chelsea |
| Have two injuries | Fund two secure starters | Spending everything on one midfielder |
| Wildcard active | Compare Palmer + budget midfield with balanced alternatives | Forced one-for-one thinking |
| Strong squad, chasing in mini-league | Accept calculated differential risk | Mistaking low ownership for good value |
| Bench cannot cover Saka | Prioritise expected minutes | Buying a second flagged player |
Our recommended selection process
Compare expected starts, role, fixtures, and the next transfer the move unlocks. First examine the Player Lab; then run two versions of your squad in the Transfer Planner. Check official manager updates on Friday. Do not take a -4 for a speculative sideways move unless its plausible net expected return across several weeks justifies the hit.
OneFPL verdict: Palmer is a natural premium replacement; Mbeumo offers a compelling balanced-squad route. Managers who need money elsewhere should consider a cheaper midfielder, but no replacement is worth buying without checking minutes and team context.
