19 September 2026. Brentford opened Gameweek 5 with a 3-0 home win over Chelsea.
Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored.
For FPL, the result changes more than one match recap: it affects Brentford's attacking hierarchy, Chelsea defensive trust, João Pedro's injury context and early GW6 Wildcard plans.
Quick lessons
| Player/team | GW5 signal | FPL read |
|---|---|---|
| Igor Thiago | League goal | WATCH/BUYABLE |
| Jaidon Anthony | Goal | Stronger midfield case |
| Kevin Schade | Started, blanked | HOLD |
| Fabio Carvalho | Bench goal | Minutes still key |
| João Pedro | Missed match | Wait for diagnosis |
| Chelsea defence | 3 conceded | Avoid forcing exposure |
| Morgan Rogers | Blank | HOLD/reassess |
1. Thiago finally has the league return
Thiago scored Brentford's second.
His previous case was built around:
- penalty-duty evidence;
- central-striker role;
- historical scoring.
The missing piece was current Premier League output.
The Chelsea goal improves that evidence.
It does not remove the price question.

2. Anthony closes the gap to Schade
Before Friday, Schade had the clearest current output after his Bournemouth brace.
Anthony's goal makes the comparison much closer.
The next decision should be based on:
- starts;
- minutes;
- shots;
- price;
- position.

3. Schade blanked — do not panic
Schade still came into GW5 with:
- three league goals;
- regular starts;
- a strong recent minutes profile.
One blank does not turn him into a sell.
The important new risk is stronger attacking competition around him.
4. Carvalho needs starts before becoming an FPL pick
Carvalho scored from the bench.
That is positive.
But FPL value needs predictable minutes.
Until his league-start share improves, he remains a watch rather than a transfer target.
5. Chelsea defence is becoming a structural concern
Chelsea have now gone 21 league matches without a clean sheet.
They have conceded 12 goals in their first five league matches of 2026/27.
Chelsea host Bournemouth in GW6.
The fixture can look attractive on a colour-coded ticker, but the real defensive evidence says caution.
Use Fixture Difficulty alongside current team data.
6. Chelsea attack is a separate decision
A poor defence does not automatically make Palmer, Rogers or João Pedro bad FPL picks.
Attackers can still return in a team that concedes.
That is why Wildcard managers should avoid treating “Chelsea” as one decision.
7. João Pedro's story changed
Before Brentford, João Pedro was a doubt.
Now we know he actually missed a Premier League match and is also out of Brazil duty.
Chelsea's next league match is Bournemouth on 10 October, so he has time to recover.

8. Rogers blanked after heavy transfer interest
Rogers entered GW5 as one of the most popular buys.
He blanked in Chelsea's worst result of the season.
Do not immediately reverse the transfer.
Instead ask:
- is his role still attacking?
- are his minutes secure?
- does João Pedro's return change his position?
- is Bournemouth at home still useful?
9. Brentford travel to Aston Villa next
That means the correct reaction is not to triple up on Brentford.
The result creates better player evidence, not necessarily a perfect GW6 fixture.
What changes for early Wildcard thinking?
Up: Anthony, Thiago, Brentford attack as a watchlist.
Neutral: Schade, Rogers.
Down: Chelsea defence.
Unknown: João Pedro until medical information improves.
OneFPL verdict
The major lesson is:
Brentford now have several credible attacking FPL routes, while Chelsea's defensive weakness is becoming a trend rather than a one-game problem.
