The short answer
Midweek football has changed several FPL Gameweek 4 decisions.
The biggest confirmed updates so far are:
- Gakpo: missed Liverpool v Atletico with minor adductor issues.
- Barcola: first Liverpool start, off on 60 minutes with cramp rather than injury.
- Isak: started and played until the 88th minute.
- Palmer: came on at half-time against Leeds and scored twice.
- Rogers: came on at half-time and was heavily involved in Chelsea's comeback.
- João Pedro: unused substitute.
- Haaland: scored both goals in City's 2-0 win at Porto.
- Tzolis: came on around 66 minutes and assisted Ødegaard's winner at Napoli.
- Nicolas Jackson: scored his first Aston Villa goal and played until the 81st minute at Club Brugge.
- Strand Larsen: two goals and an assist before being substituted on 73 minutes against Middlesbrough.
- Tyrick Mitchell: unused substitute in the same Palace cup tie.
- Lewis Hall: started Newcastle's 1-0 win at Millwall and assisted Joe Willock's winner.
- Yoane Wissa: started for Newcastle and was substituted on 66 minutes.
Manchester United still host Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday 10 September, so Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo and other United assets still need one final midweek check.
Why these minutes matter
FPL managers should not treat every midweek appearance as a negative.
The useful questions are:
- Did the player start?
- How long did he play?
- Was the substitution tactical, fitness-related or injury-related?
- Did the player receive a full rest?
- Did his tactical role change?
- How much recovery time is available before the Premier League fixture?

Liverpool: Gakpo risk rises, but not because he was dropped
Liverpool's official explanation is crucial.
Gakpo missed Atletico because of minor adductor issues after the Ipswich match. Iraola said it was not a proper injury and that Gakpo had a chance of returning at the weekend.
Barcola's first start creates genuine competition, but the Atletico XI cannot be used as proof that he displaced Gakpo.
Isak played 88 minutes and remains Liverpool's clearest central scoring route.

Chelsea: the workload split is excellent FPL information
Palmer and Rogers were introduced at half-time.
Palmer scored twice, including a penalty.
João Pedro did not play.
That means Chelsea's three major FPL attackers all emerge with a reasonable GW4 workload profile:
- Palmer: form + penalties + 45 minutes,
- Rogers: strong involvement + 45 minutes,
- João Pedro: complete rest.
Manchester City: Haaland keeps scoring
Haaland scored in the 47th and 90+1 minutes as Manchester City beat Porto 2-0.
The performance strengthens the form case.
The FPL limitation is the fixture: City travel to Manchester United in GW4.
Haaland remains capable of hauling in any match, but Palmer and Isak have easier-looking home fixtures.
Arsenal: Tzolis gets the ideal kind of European night
Tzolis did not start at Napoli.
He entered in the second half and combined with Ben White before setting up Martin Ødegaard for the only goal.
For FPL managers, this is a useful combination:
- he avoided a full 90-minute European workload,
- still produced an attacking return,
- Arsenal visit Sunderland next.
It does not make him nailed, but it improves the argument for holding before GW4.
Aston Villa: Jackson finally scores
Aston Villa beat Club Brugge 3-2 for their first win of the season.
Nicolas Jackson scored Villa's third goal in the 43rd minute — his first for the club — and stayed on until Tammy Abraham replaced him in the 81st minute.
Villa had failed to score in their first three Premier League matches, so the European game is meaningful positive evidence without proving all their attacking problems are solved.
Crystal Palace: two different FPL stories
Palace made eight changes and beat Middlesbrough 3-0.
Strand Larsen produced the biggest individual performance: two headed goals and the assist for Daichi Kamada before going off in the 73rd minute.
Mitchell was an unused substitute, which keeps him fresh for Ipswich.
But Ben Chilwell started and assisted Strand Larsen's second goal, adding another attacking return after scoring from the bench at Fulham.
For Mitchell owners, freshness is positive. For new buyers, Chilwell's form means left-sided minutes still deserve monitoring.
Newcastle: Hall's attacking case survives the cup
Lewis Hall started at Millwall and assisted Joe Willock's 81st-minute winner.
Yoane Wissa started at centre-forward and was replaced after 66 minutes.
Hall's extra workload is a small negative compared with a full rest, but another assist reinforces why his attacking role keeps him near the top of the budget-defender conversation.
Thursday watch: Manchester United
United host Sabah in the Champions League on 10 September, then host Manchester City in the Premier League on 13 September.
That short turnaround makes their European XI particularly important.
Before moving Bruno Fernandes, Mbeumo or another United asset, check:
- start/bench status,
- total minutes,
- knocks,
- any tactical-role change.
This article should receive one final Thursday update after the match.
OneFPL verdict
The players whose GW4 outlook improved most from the completed midweek matches are Palmer, Rogers, João Pedro, Tzolis, Strand Larsen and Hall for different reasons.
Gakpo is the main monitor because the injury sounds minor but is still unresolved.
Isak and Haaland remain elite assets, with heavier European workloads already logged.
