Liverpool 2–0 Brighton: FPL GW8 post-match analysis
Liverpool won 2–0 at Anfield on 25 October 2026. A Pascal Groß own goal from Florian Wirtz's effort opened the scoring; Alexander Isak then finished a Bradley Barcola cutback. Liverpool FC's match report confirms the goals and the manager's lineup changes.
What happened and who matters in FPL?
| Player | GW8 development | GW9 implication |
|---|---|---|
| Alexander Isak | Scored for a third consecutive league match | Strong form but Arsenal at home is a difficult matchup |
| Florian Wirtz | Shot led to Groß own goal; substituted in second half | Chance involvement matters even without a regular goal credit |
| Bradley Barcola | Supplied cutback for Isak | Assess future starts and assists rather than one moment |
| Pascal Groß | Credited with own goal | Do not confuse an own goal with an FPL attacking return |
| Liverpool defenders | Team earned clean sheet | Individual awards depend on minutes and official FPL scoring |

The important xG contradiction
According to Sky Sports' match statistics, Brighton produced 1.35 xG, compared with 0.87 for Liverpool. Brighton had more shots, but just one on target. That does not mean Brighton should automatically have won. xG describes the quality of chances taken, not the sequence, goalkeeping, game state or finishing outcome.
For FPL managers, the result is a warning against making transfers from scorelines alone. An attacker can blank after good opportunities; a team can win with fewer expected goals.
The Isak decision: buy, hold or chase?
Isak's run of goals makes holding attractive when you already own him. Buying solely for GW9 is less straightforward because Liverpool host Arsenal on Sunday 1 November. Selling a reliable forward to fund a premium transfer should be judged over several Gameweeks. His finishing run is encouraging, but future chances matter more than the third consecutive goal itself.
Brighton: sell everyone?
No. Their failure to score and the Groß own goal were disappointing, but chance creation still showed signs of life. Brighton next visit Manchester City, which weakens the immediate fixture case. A manager with multiple Brighton assets can consider reducing exposure, especially where a player's role is uncertain; wholesale selling after one match can create unnecessary costs.
Bonus points, clean sheets and Wirtz's action
Own-goal and assist attribution follows the official FPL FAQ; a shot that causes an own goal is not automatically the same as a normal goal. Check FPL's event record for the final credited contribution. Liverpool's clean-sheet points also depend on individual minutes played and any disciplinary deductions.
OneFPL verdict: Isak's role and minutes are the most important positive; Brighton's xG is the reminder not to overreact to a blank. Compare both clubs in Player Lab before the Liverpool–Arsenal deadline decision.
