Tottenham Hotspur have produced the window's most aggressive rebuild. With Roberto De Zerbi newly installed in the dugout, Spurs have committed more than £230 million on a new spine — headlined by a £92.5m deal for Sandro Tonali that could rise to £100m, and an £85m club-record move for Mateus Fernandes. For FPL managers, this is the club to watch before GW1's trip to Brentford.

The headline signings, analysed

Sandro Tonali — the £92.5m conductor

The 26-year-old Italy international leaves Newcastle after 110 appearances and 10 goals, having helped the Magpies win the 2025 Carabao Cup. Tonali made his name at Brescia — the hometown club of his new manager — and De Zerbi made him a priority target after a near-two-hour meeting that convinced the midfielder "there was only one" club for him.

Tonali's game is about tempo, duels and vertical passing rather than raw FPL output — he has never been a double-figure goal midfielder. Expect a mid-priced FPL midfielder whose value comes from bonus-point potential (tackles, passes) rather than hauls.

Mateus Fernandes — the FPL gem of the window?

This is the signing FPL managers should circle in red. The 21-year-old Portuguese was West Ham's standout in a relegation season:

  • 36 Premier League appearances, 3 goals, 4 assists
  • 103 tackles — joint-fifth most in the entire league
  • West Ham's Goal of the Season winner and Hammer of the Year runner-up
  • 7.24 average rating; 37 chances created; 2,120 touches

Fernandes combines defensive-contribution potential with set-piece-adjacent creativity — exactly the profile that thrives in a De Zerbi possession side. He arrives off the back of his first senior Portugal cap. If priced in the budget-midfielder bracket, he is a near-lock for GW1 squads.

Jan Paul van Hecke — £52m of defensive security

Spurs beat the market for Brighton's Dutch centre-back, their third defensive addition of the window. Van Hecke was one of the league's most progressive passing defenders, and his arrival — alongside free transfers Marcos Senesi (Bournemouth's former defensive leader) and Andy Robertson (a serial assist source at Liverpool) — transforms a Spurs back line that conceded 57 last season.

Robertson at £0m is the classic FPL sleeper: if he starts ahead of the left-back depth chart, a proven attacking full-back in an expansive system at a probable budget price is gift-wrapped value.

What it means for FPL managers

  • Target Spurs' attack and midfield from GW1. Brentford (A) is a favourable opener, and De Zerbi teams historically start fast.
  • Fernandes > Tonali in FPL terms. Tonali is the better footballer for the system; Fernandes is the better fantasy asset.
  • Defence is a wait-and-see. New back fours need time — but monitor Robertson's pre-season minutes closely.
  • Avoid Dúbravka — he is experienced cover, not a challenger for the No.1 shirt.

Bottom line: Spurs are the winners of the window so far. Fernandes is the standout FPL pick; Robertson could be the bargain of the season if he nails the left-back spot.
