Updated 16 September 2026. Arsenal beat Ipswich 4-2 in the EFL Cup, but the most useful FPL information is not the scoreline.
It is the distribution of minutes.
Bukayo Saka and Riccardo Calafiori were unused substitutes. Gabriel played only the first half. Martin Ødegaard entered late. Noni Madueke and Bruno Guimarães carried heavier workloads.
With Arsenal travelling to Brighton in GW5, those differences matter.
Arsenal's cup workload
| Player | Ipswich role | Approx. workload | GW5 implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bukayo Saka | Unused substitute | 0 | Strong rest signal |
| Riccardo Calafiori | Unused substitute | 0 | Strong rest signal |
| Gabriel | Started, off HT | 45 | Controlled workload |
| Ezri Konsa | On HT | 45 | Moderate workload |
| Martin Ødegaard | On 76' | ~14 | Very light load |
| Christos Tzolis | On 76' | ~14 | Very light load |
| Bruno Guimarães | Started, off 64' | ~64 | Moderate-heavy |
| Noni Madueke | Started, off 76' | ~76 | Heavy-ish |
| Eberechi Eze | Started, off 76' | ~76 | Heavy-ish |
| Viktor Gyökeres | Started | Heavy | Monitor |
| Max Dowman | Started | Heavy | Two goals, minutes competition increases |
Saka: the cleanest FPL signal
Saka was available from the bench but did not play.
For FPL managers, that is close to the ideal midweek outcome.
He gets:
- no cup minutes,
- no additional match fatigue,
- no new in-game injury event,
- and a full preparation window for Brighton.
That does not guarantee a haul.
It strengthens expected minutes.
For a premium player, expected minutes are the first thing managers should protect.

Latest FPL news
Should Saka be a captain?
Brighton away is not the same type of captaincy fixture as Haaland hosting Sunderland.
So Saka's rest improves his case as a starter, but does not automatically make him the best captain.
Use Captains for the final comparison.
Calafiori: full rest is valuable
Calafiori also remained unused.
That makes him one of the Arsenal defenders to emerge from Tuesday with no extra workload.
The wider Arsenal defence still has competition, so the correct question is not only "Who rested?"
It is also:
Who is most secure in the league XI?
Check Team News after Arteta's press conference.
Gabriel: only 45 minutes
Gabriel started, but Konsa replaced him at half-time.
A 45-minute cup appearance is much less concerning than 90 minutes.
For FPL, that means:
- he maintained match rhythm,
- workload was limited,
- and Arsenal did not need to push him through the entire tie.
There is no obvious fatigue reason from Tuesday alone to downgrade him for Brighton.
Konsa: half a match keeps the competition alive
Konsa played the second half.
His arrival this summer increased the number of defensive combinations available to Arteta.
Managers looking for a cheaper route into the Arsenal defence should therefore be careful about assuming one cup selection makes a player nailed.
This is where Team News matters more than a raw minutes table.
Ødegaard: short cameo
Ødegaard entered around the 76th minute.
That is a very light workload.
If you own him, Tuesday does not create a minutes concern for GW5.
It also means managers comparing Ødegaard with other mid-price midfielders should focus on:
- league role,
- set pieces,
- points potential,
- and fixtures,
not cup fatigue.
Tzolis: short cameo, but competition remains
Tzolis also entered late.
That keeps his workload manageable, but his FPL problem remains selection competition.
A 14-minute cup cameo does not prove whether he starts at Brighton.
Managers searching for a differential should wait for stronger lineup evidence.
Madueke: goal, but significant minutes
Madueke scored Arsenal's second.
That is a positive performance.
He also played roughly three-quarters of the match.
For FPL, those two facts point in different directions:
- performance improves his case,
- workload increases uncertainty around the league turnaround.
Do not buy purely because of the goal.
Bruno Guimarães: useful role, heavier load
Bruno played more than an hour.
His Arsenal FPL role is still developing after his summer move.
The cup appearance gives more tactical evidence, but his GW5 appeal should be based on:
- league starts,
- attacking position,
- set pieces,
- defensive contributions,
- and Brighton's matchup.
Use Defensive Contributions and Player Lab.
Max Dowman: two goals — should FPL managers buy?
No immediate rush.
Dowman scored in the seventh and 47th minutes.
The performance is significant because a 16-year-old forcing his way into senior minutes changes the depth chart.
But Arsenal still have multiple senior attackers.
The FPL takeaway is:
Dowman is now a stronger minutes competitor and watchlist player, not automatically a Premier League starter.
That can affect other Arsenal attackers even before Dowman becomes buyable himself.
Does Dowman's performance hurt other Arsenal attackers?
Potentially.
If Arteta trusts him more often from the bench, there are more routes to:
- earlier substitutions,
- managed minutes,
- occasional rotation.
That matters most for fringe attackers.
It matters less for Saka, whose role remains much stronger.
Brighton away: what actually matters
Arsenal travel to Brighton on Saturday 19 September.
Before the deadline, prioritise:
- press-conference injury information,
- expected league starters,
- European/cup workload,
- role,
- opponent.
Do not overvalue the fact that one player scored in the cup if another was deliberately rested for the league.
Best Arsenal FPL reads after Ipswich
| Player | Current GW5 read |
|---|---|
| Saka | Strong start confidence |
| Calafiori | Rest positive; confirm lineup security |
| Gabriel | 45-minute load is manageable |
| Ødegaard | Short cameo, no workload concern |
| Tzolis | Minutes manageable; start still uncertain |
| Madueke | Goal positive; workload worth monitoring |
| Bruno | Useful evidence but heavier load |
| Dowman | Watchlist, not a blind FPL buy |
OneFPL verdict
The biggest Arsenal FPL winners from the Ipswich tie were the players who did not need to play.
Saka and Calafiori were fully rested.
Gabriel played only one half.
Ødegaard had a short cameo.
That is more useful for GW5 planning than chasing Dowman's two cup goals.
