The short answer
The £5.5m midfield bracket is much stronger than it first appears.
Pascal Groß has penalties plus corners and free-kicks. Mamadou Sangaré offers one of the best projected defensive-contribution profiles. Daizen Maeda brings more direct attacking potential, while other £5.5m options can work as fifth midfielders if their minutes are secure.
OneFPL ranking
| Rank | Player | Club | Best route to points | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pascal Groß | Brighton | Penalties + corners + free-kicks | Brighton role must remain advanced enough |
| 2 | Mamadou Sangaré | Brentford | DefCon + secure central minutes + some attack | Lower goal ceiling than a winger |
| 3 | Daizen Maeda | Ipswich | Direct running and attacking role | Crowded Ipswich attack after Enciso arrival |
| 4 | Rodrigo Bentancur | Spurs | DefCon and secure midfield minutes | Limited penalty-box involvement |
| 5 | Gustavo Hamer | Coventry | Creativity and attacking upside | New-team hierarchy and difficult GW1 |
1. Pascal Groß: the best attacking £5.5m midfielder
Official FPL analysis now calls Groß the standout budget midfielder for attacking potential.
The reason is simple: following Danny Welbeck's move to Chelsea, Groß has taken over penalty duties while remaining Brighton's main taker of corners and free-kicks.
He also scored a penalty and supplied an assist in Brighton's 4-3 pre-season win over Strasbourg.
At £5.5m, that dead-ball package is difficult to find elsewhere.
2. Mamadou Sangaré: the DefCon pick
Sangaré's appeal is almost the opposite.
In 32 Ligue 1 starts for Lens last season, he produced three goals and four assists. More importantly for the new FPL scoring, official analysis estimates he would have reached the defensive-contribution threshold in 19 of those 32 matches, a 59.4% success rate.
He then scored in Brentford's 7-0 final-friendly win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
That makes him a useful fifth midfielder who can score without needing a goal or assist every week.

3. Daizen Maeda: the attacking gamble
Maeda is priced at £5.5m and gives Ipswich a direct attacking option.
The risk is that Ipswich's attack has become much more crowded following the late signing of Julio Enciso. That makes Maeda more explosive than Sangaré but less secure as a long-term "set and forget" enabler.

How to choose your £5.5m midfielder
| Squad need | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Attacking returns | Groß |
| Reliable floor | Sangaré |
| Differential upside | Maeda |
| Defensive-contribution focus | Sangaré / Bentancur |
| Short-term promoted-team gamble | Hamer / Maeda |
Do not automatically spend £5.5m just because the player starts. Compare the bracket with the best £5.0m midfielders. Saving £0.5m can be more useful if the cheaper player offers similar minutes.
Is £5.5m better than £6.0m?
Not always.
The £6.0m bracket contains more attacking profiles, but a £5.5m midfielder can be ideal when the rest of your squad is expensive. Groß in particular can compete with more expensive players because penalties and set pieces create extra routes to returns.

OneFPL verdict
Groß is the No.1 £5.5m midfielder for attacking upside. Sangaré is the best floor/DefCon alternative. Maeda is the more aggressive pick if Ipswich's final hierarchy gives him secure starts.
FAQ
Who is the best £5.5m FPL midfielder?
Pascal Groß currently leads because he combines penalties, corners and free-kicks at only £5.5m.
Is Sangaré a good FPL pick?
Yes as a budget enabler. His strongest route is defensive contributions rather than explosive attacking returns.
Is Maeda nailed at Ipswich?
Ipswich have added several attackers, including Julio Enciso, so his exact minutes should be checked before the GW1 deadline.
