Gabriel vs Raya vs Calafiori: Arsenal FPL defence for GW10

Arsenal travel home after winning 1–0 at Liverpool on Sunday. Six clean sheets in their first nine league matches make their defence one of the strongest fantasy storylines of 2026/27 so far. Their Gameweek 10 opponent is promoted Hull City at home, but future games against Newcastle and Manchester City complicate an all-in defensive triple-up.

There is no universal best Arsenal asset. The answer changes if you need a goalkeeper, want an inexpensive route to the defence, already own two Arsenal players or need attacking potential from a defender.

Gabriel: premium route to secure defensive points

The attraction is straightforward. Arsenal keep clean sheets regularly, and Gabriel can add points on set pieces and defensive actions. He is also expensive enough that an extra £2m or more committed to defence could change your forward and midfield options. When comparing him with a cheaper defender, do not ask only who scores more points. Ask what the extra money could do in your starting XI.

Who should buy? Managers with a strong bench and enough money for their primary attackers, particularly those buying for more than one week. Who should hold off? Managers who would need a -4 hit and downgrade a productive premium just to afford the defender.

Calafiori: cheaper access, but check minutes first

Calafiori's biggest advantage is price relative to Gabriel. After the Anfield clean sheet, Fantasy Football Scout noted he also produced defensive contributions. His role can shift toward wing-back in certain situations, which makes his positional upside interesting. That does not make him permanently out of position or remove the possibility of tactical rotation.

Before buying, check his most recent starts, substitutions, availability and Arsenal's European schedule. A cheaper defender who starts only some matches can underperform an expensive regular even with the same team-level clean-sheet chance.

Raya: stability when your goalkeeper slot needs fixing

Raya provides the same team clean-sheet opportunity from the goalkeeper position. This can be particularly helpful if your current goalkeeper is not starting or regularly faces difficult opponents. The trade-off is that goalkeeper upside is usually narrower than defender upside from goals, assists and defensive contributions.

If you already own Gabriel and Calafiori, Raya would use the third Arsenal slot. That might prevent a later midfield or forward purchase. If you own only Raya, you can still research another Arsenal defender without spending a transfer on a goalkeeper change.

Should you double or triple Arsenal defence?

Arsenal host Hull on 7 November, then visit Newcastle on 21 November and host City on 28 November. GW10 has a favorable profile, but the next two fixtures carry higher difficulty. Two defenders can be justified by Arsenal's season-long record; three is a much more aggressive bet on one team's clean sheets.

A practical rule: buy the second Arsenal defender only if they improve at least two or three upcoming lineups, not because you expect another automatic six points this weekend. Remember that clean sheets can disappear through one late goal or a substitution before the 60-minute threshold.

Which Arsenal defender should you choose?

  • Want the strongest premium defender profile? Start with Gabriel.
  • Need value and can accept more selection uncertainty? Investigate Calafiori.
  • Need a long-term goalkeeper replacement? Raya can be the cleanest structural move.
  • Already own two Arsenal players? Audit the remaining third slot before using it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gabriel worth the premium price in FPL GW10?

Potentially, particularly for a multiweek hold, but compare the money you sacrifice elsewhere before buying.

Is Calafiori guaranteed to start against Hull?

No player should be treated as guaranteed ahead of team news. Check his role, fitness and likely minutes after European fixtures.

Should I triple up on Arsenal defence?

Only if the cost and future fixtures suit your squad; the third slot raises concentration risk after GW10.
