Best Leeds FPL defensive picks after GW8: who offers real value?
Leeds' 0–0 draw at Sunderland on 25 October was a defensive success but it did not make every Leeds player an equally good Fantasy transfer. James Trafford earned 10 FPL points with four saves and three bonus. Centre-back Tarik Muharemović delivered nine points, including a defensive-contribution return, while Jayden Bogle offered a more attack-minded route to upside. The recent Fantasy Football Scout GW8 notes provide the match details.
Leeds have conceded six goals in eight league matches, according to that report. The relevant question for GW9 and beyond is which position and scoring profile best fit your squad, not which player produced the biggest score on Sunday.
Leeds FPL picks compared
| Player | Price noted 26 Oct | Main route to points | Key risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| James Trafford (GKP) | £5.0m | Saves, clean sheets and bonus | Goalkeepers may deliver modest scores despite good performance |
| Tarik Muharemović (DEF) | £5.1m | Clean sheets, DefCon and set-piece shots | A higher price than budget defensive alternatives |
| Jayden Bogle (DEF) | £4.7m | Attacking involvement and clean sheets | Attack-minded positioning can increase volatility |
| Nico Elvedi (DEF) | £4.5m | Cheaper starting-defender route when fit | Missed GW8 through illness; verify return |

Trafford: safest route to save points?
Trafford's 10-point GW8 performance included saves in a goalless match. The longer-term reason to consider him is that save opportunities can supplement clean sheets, and his role has been stable. Scout reports 30 saves and an 88.2% save rate at this stage. However, do not forecast repeated double-digit scores: bonus and clean-sheet returns are volatile.
For a manager with a weak first-choice goalkeeper, paying £5.0m for Trafford could be reasonable if the coming fixtures suit. For an owner of a reliable premium keeper, a goalkeeper transfer is normally less urgent than solving an injured starter.
Muharemović: the strongest defensive contribution case
Muharemović registered 13 defensive actions and earned DefCon points against Sunderland. Scout also notes seven penalty-area shots this season, suggesting a route to occasional attacking returns from set plays. Of the three, he has the strongest combination of defensive-contribution reliability and set-piece threat.
That does not make him a guaranteed clean-sheet points machine. Evaluate his returns across several Gameweeks and compare his price with the alternatives in OneFPL Player Lab.
Bogle: the budget-leaning alternative
Bogle took two shots against Sunderland and has also taken seven shots from the penalty area this season, according to the match notes. His lower price makes him attractive to managers who need funds for a forward or captaincy upgrade. The trade-off is that attacking returns from a full-back are less predictable than a consistent minutes-and-DefCon floor.
GW9 and longer-term strategy
Leeds visit Bournemouth in GW9, which limits the case for buying their defence solely for the immediate clean sheet. The comparison is stronger over a planned three- to five-week horizon. Do not transfer out an existing good defender just to chase Sunday's score.
| Your problem | Preferred shortlist |
|---|---|
| Need a main goalkeeper and can invest around £5m | Trafford |
| Need a defender with consistent defensive contribution upside | Muharemović |
| Need a slightly cheaper attacking defender | Bogle |
| Budget is extremely tight | Reassess Elvedi's illness and other £4.0m–£4.5m options |
Verdict: Muharemović is the more balanced FPL defender; Bogle offers a cheaper, more attacking variation; Trafford is compelling if you specifically need a goalkeeper. Use OneFPL Transfer Planner to see the effect on the rest of your 15 players.
