Best budget FPL defenders in 2026/27: what matters more than price?
Updated after Gameweek 8 on 26 October. A budget defender should earn points through more than hoping for a 1–0 victory. In 2026/27, defensive-contribution points (DefCon) reward defenders who repeatedly reach the qualifying action threshold, giving certain centre-backs a more predictable floor.
OneFPL's budget-defender research should therefore balance price, minutes, clean-sheet potential, DefCon and attacking involvement. Those five factors matter more than one spectacular Gameweek.

Why DefCon changes how to choose
For defenders, the official Fantasy defensive contribution threshold is based on defensive actions such as clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles. A player reaching the qualifying threshold earns two extra FPL points for that match. Players with consistent actions therefore may deliver useful returns even when the clean sheet disappears.
Bournemouth's António Silva has reached the threshold six times in eight games, based on Scout's reporting. Leeds' Muharemović recorded 13 defensive actions against Sunderland in GW8. These examples are better evidence than simply saying “he looks solid.” But no historical hit rate makes a future return certain.
Don't overlook the fixture and the bench
Bournemouth host Leeds in GW9. Leeds' defensive improvement makes both the home attack and away clean sheet harder to forecast than raw fixture colour might suggest. A £4.0m defender who is not a reliable starter may be a poor first substitute even if his price helps the squad total.
