If your FPL captain gets sent off, does your vice-captain take over?
No—provided your captain has played any minutes in the Gameweek. In Fantasy Premier League, the vice-captain inherits the armband only if the captain does not appear at all. A red card, a one-point cameo or a negative score does not activate your vice-captain. This is confirmed by the official FPL FAQ.
The rule became especially relevant on 24 October 2026 when Chelsea's Cole Palmer was dismissed during a 0–2 defeat to Tottenham. Many managers expected a vice-captain to save their Gameweek, but Palmer had played, so the original captain decision still applied.
Captaincy situations explained
| Situation | Who receives double points? |
|---|---|
| Captain plays 90 minutes and blanks | Captain |
| Captain plays one minute | Captain |
| Captain is sent off after playing | Captain, including negative disciplinary deductions |
| Captain never plays in any fixture that GW | Vice-captain, provided they play |
| Neither captain nor vice-captain plays | No player's points doubled |
Example: a captain sent off
Imagine a midfielder scores a negative FPL total after card deductions. If you captained him and he played, his doubled score can be negative. The vice-captain's points remain ordinary points. This may seem harsh, but it follows the game's simple appearance-based rule rather than a minimum-points threshold.
Example: a captain not in the squad
If the selected captain does not play any minutes at all across their Gameweek fixtures, the vice-captain inherits the captaincy as long as they appear. This is different from a player being substituted off early or being sent off, because those events mean they did appear.

Does an automatic substitution help?
Auto-subs apply to your starting XI when a player has not played, subject to formation rules and the bench order. A starter who played and received a red card is not eligible to be replaced by a bench player merely for scoring poorly. Similarly, a captain who appeared cannot be swapped for a better vice-captain after the deadline.
For the 2026/27 season, official FPL's final Gameweek points lockdown is at 09:00 UK time on the day after the last match. Before lockdown, bonus and defensive-contribution adjustments can change provisional totals. Read our live rank explainer for why your live score and final score may differ.
How to reduce captaincy risk
Choose an expected starter with strong minutes prospects. Pick a vice-captain who is likely to play but remember that the vice is insurance against zero minutes, not a safety net against a blank or red card. Use projected minutes, role and fixtures, not only the previous Gameweek's points.

Editorial correction — 26 October 2026: Palmer’s red card provides the rule example
Cole Palmer was sent off against Spurs but did appear in GW8. Therefore the vice-captain does not replace a manager’s Palmer captaincy. The captain multiplier applies to the final score, including deductions. In contrast, a captain with zero minutes can promote the vice if the vice played.
