FPL DefCon value: how to identify defenders who earn defensive contribution points
Defensive contribution points can create an additional points route for defenders even without an assist or clean sheet. In 2026/27, a defender earns two FPL points after recording at least 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT) in one match. Midfielders and forwards can qualify through 12 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions, tackles and recoveries (CBIRT). The award is capped at two points per match.
The correct DefCon rules
| Position | Counted actions | Threshold | FPL reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defender | Clearances, blocks, interceptions, tackles | 10 | +2 points |
| Midfielder | Same plus recoveries | 12 | +2 points |
| Forward | Same plus recoveries | 12 | +2 points |
Accumulating 20 CBIT as a defender does not earn four points: the reward does not multiply. Figures can also be corrected before official finalisation.

How to rank potential DefCon picks
A defensively busy player is not automatically the best FPL defender. Compare:
- Threshold hit rate: proportion of starts reaching the relevant actions threshold.
- Expected playing minutes: a player consistently substituted early may have fewer opportunities.
- Fixture type: matches where the team expects to defend more may increase actions but reduce clean-sheet probability.
- Set-piece and attacking involvement: a defender can earn points through several routes.
- Price and transfer cost: a cheap player who plays regularly can be valuable despite fewer attacking returns.
Do not publish “top five DefCon picks” with uncalculated hit rates or invented per-90 numbers. If OneFPL's live data has those statistics, show the sample size, threshold definition and review timestamp.
Worked comparison
Consider Defender A, who often earns clean sheets but rarely reaches ten actions, versus Defender B, who reaches the DefCon threshold more often but plays in a weaker defence. You should add both routes to estimated points and review fixtures. One additional DefCon award is worth two points in a match; that may partly offset a lower clean-sheet expectation but does not guarantee a better overall pick.

Example: 9 actions versus 10 actions
Defender A completes four clearances, two blocks, two interceptions and one tackle: nine CBIT and no DefCon threshold award. Defender B makes four clearances, two blocks, two interceptions and two tackles: ten CBIT and earns the two-point defensive-contribution reward. A midfielder with ten of the same actions might still need recoveries to reach the separate 12-action CBIRT threshold.
Why a weekly ranking can mislead
One high-action performance against a dominant opponent is not necessarily repeatable. Use several starts, disclose which fixtures were sampled and avoid mixing defender CBIT with midfielder CBIRT as if they were identical measures. A strong DefCon record should complement clean-sheet, save, assist and goal potential rather than replace those inputs.
