FPL GW9 start or bench? Arsenal, Liverpool, Brighton and Chelsea
The biggest GW9 dilemma is not always whether to sell an expensive player. Sometimes the smarter answer is to start a difficult fixture, bench a rotation-prone option, and save a transfer. Liverpool host Arsenal, Manchester City host Brighton, and Chelsea face Manchester United. Those fixtures concentrate risk in teams many managers own heavily.
The starting-XI decision table
| Situation | Default view | What changes the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Arsenal defender at Liverpool | Start if secure starter, especially with DefCon routes | Confirmed injury or a strong alternative defender |
| Arsenal attacking midfielder | Don't bench automatically for a difficult away fixture | Low expected minutes or high-quality substitute |
| Liverpool striker vs Arsenal | Start if fully fit and expected to start | New injury or confirmed managed minutes |
| Groß or De Cuyper away to Man City | Compare carefully with your first substitute | Flag, 90-minute cup appearance, strong bench fixture |
| Palmer vs Man Utd | Eligible for league fixture, but check fitness and role | Late illness, injury or manager selection warning |
| Chelsea forward João Pedro | Do not select while confirmed out for weeks | Only a new official recovery update changes status |

A difficult fixture is not a reason to bench a premium player automatically
A good attacker can score against an elite defence; the key question is whether they are likely to start and have a credible attacking role. By contrast, a cheap defender away to a title contender may rely on defensive contributions rather than a clean sheet. Consider the difference between expected points and emotional fear of a blank.
Brighton at Manchester City
Brighton's De Cuyper and Groß are particularly interesting because both have delivered points despite difficult matchups. Do not simply erase those returns because their opponent is City. Instead, compare three channels: minutes security, attacking/set-piece involvement and the likely points floor. For a defender, a realistic DefCon opportunity can reduce reliance on a clean sheet, although it does not remove the downside of goals conceded.
Chelsea's different situation
João Pedro is unavailable for the near term according to Alonso. That may lead to role changes for Rogers, Palmer and other attackers. The crucial new evidence will come from the Liverpool cup tie and the manager's next press conference. Palmer's red-card suspension is expected to be served in that cup match, not in GW9. That makes fitness and role the relevant questions for league selection.
When to take a hit or use a chip
Avoid a four-point hit simply because two high-priced players face each other. If both have dependable starts and an acceptable points projection, the move may not gain enough to cover its cost. A Free Hit becomes more interesting if your squad has several unavailable players or if the one-week XI is substantially better than the alternative. Use the existing GW9 Free Hit guide for that separate decision.
Final bench checklist
Confirm formation legality, bench order, actual squad availability and captaincy. If two options look close, prefer the higher expected minutes and clearer path to points. Compare players in OneFPL Player Lab, then apply the decision to your personal team rather than following a universal start/bench ranking.
