Seven tips for first-time FPL managers
Joining the Rookie League does not require a completely different strategy. New managers should begin with a few simple principles.
1. Select regular starters
Prioritise players who are expected to start consistently. A talented player who regularly sits on the bench may not provide enough FPL points.
2. Plan beyond Gameweek 1
Review at least the opening five or six fixtures before selecting a player. Avoid building a team that looks excellent for one Gameweek but immediately requires several transfers.
3. Choose a reliable captain
Your captain receives double points, making captaincy one of the most important weekly decisions. Premium attackers with strong fixtures are usually the safest options.
4. Avoid unnecessary transfer hits
Managers normally receive a limited number of free transfers. Additional transfers can cost points, so do not make a transfer simply because one player had a poor match.
5. Keep at least one usable substitute
Injuries, rotation and unexpected absences are common. At least one outfield substitute should have a realistic chance of playing.
6. Check news before every deadline
Review injury updates, press conferences and likely lineups before confirming your team.
7. Be patient with your chips
Do not activate a Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain or Bench Boost only because you had one disappointing Gameweek. Chips are most valuable when used with a clear plan.
