Van Dijk is our preferred premium defender for managers making a transfer that should last beyond GW3.
Liverpool visit Ipswich and have already produced 12 shots from set pieces, joint-second among Premier League teams after two Gameweeks.
That matters because Van Dijk adds genuine attacking threat to Liverpool's clean-sheet potential.
He is also considerably more secure for minutes than many premium defenders from rotation-heavy squads.

2. Nathan Collins
Brentford are projected around 39 percent for a GW3 clean sheet against Sunderland in Fantasy Football Scout's current model.
Collins is attractive because he can score points at both ends.
Brentford have generated 21 shots from set pieces, while Collins has already been involved in five headed set-piece attempts.
That makes him more appealing than a defender whose only realistic route is four clean-sheet points.

3. Maxim De Cuyper
De Cuyper offers a different profile.
His advanced role has already produced a goal and an assist, meaning FPL managers are not relying solely on Brighton keeping a clean sheet.
Brighton face Leeds in GW3 and also rate well for clean-sheet potential.

What to do with Manchester City defenders
This is the important GW3 trap.
Manchester City are the only team above 40 percent in Fantasy Football Scout's current clean-sheet projection for the Gameweek as they host Coventry.
On fixture alone, City defenders look obvious.
The problem is selection.
Recent additions and City's existing defensive depth make it difficult to know which defenders will consistently start over the next several Gameweeks.
Therefore:
- Start a fit City defender if you already own one.
- Do not bench Gvardiol just because of rotation fear.
- Avoid taking a hit simply to buy a City defender for one match.

Arsenal: better long term than short term
Arsenal remain one of the strongest defensive teams to own over the medium term.
Their GW3 meeting with Chelsea is more difficult than the fixtures available to City, Brentford or Liverpool, so buying an Arsenal defender specifically for this week is not essential.
But selling a secure Arsenal defender purely because of one tougher match can also be short-sighted.

Do not assess defenders using clean-sheet odds alone.
The new defensive-contribution scoring creates another possible route to points for centre-backs and defensively active players.
When comparing two defenders, consider:
- clean-sheet probability;
- set-piece threat;
- tackles, blocks, interceptions and clearances;
- chance creation;
- expected minutes;
- rotation risk;
- future fixtures.
That is particularly useful when a defender has a difficult fixture but can still collect points through defensive work.

Premium
