FPL Gameweek 1 Captain 2026/27: Haaland vs Bruno Fernandes vs Cole Palmer
Haaland hosts Bournemouth, Bruno Fernandes visits promoted Hull City and Cole Palmer travels to Fulham. We compare the three leading FPL Gameweek 1 captaincy options.
The first captaincy decision of the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League season already looks important.
Erling Haaland starts at home against Bournemouth, Bruno Fernandes visits promoted Hull City and Cole Palmer travels to Fulham.
All three have the potential to produce a strong return, but they offer different combinations of fixture quality, price, expected minutes and squad flexibility.
The Gameweek 1 fixtures
The three main candidates begin with:
Erling Haaland: Bournemouth at home
Bruno Fernandes: Hull City away
Cole Palmer: Fulham away
Manchester United play first on Saturday, 22 August. Manchester City host Bournemouth on Sunday, while Chelsea visit Fulham on Monday night.
The match date should not determine your choice. Expected minutes, attacking role and the quality of the fixture matter more.
Erling Haaland: £15.5m
Haaland is the most expensive player in FPL history at £15.5m.
He finished the previous season as the highest-scoring player in the game, recording 239 points from 27 goals and eight assists. He has also started each of his Manchester City seasons strongly, making him the early captaincy favourite.
Why captain Haaland?
The main argument is his goal ceiling.
Manchester City are at home, and Haaland remains the player most capable of scoring two or three goals in a single fixture. If City dominate Bournemouth, most of their best chances are likely to fall to him.
The main concern is his preparation. Haaland played for Norway at the World Cup and is expected to return later than players who received a full summer break. His minutes during Manchester City’s final friendlies should therefore be monitored.
If Haaland starts the final friendly and is confirmed fit, he is the best Gameweek 1 captain.
Bruno Fernandes: £12.0m
Bruno begins the season at £12.0m after scoring 235 points last year, only four fewer than Haaland.
He recorded nine goals, 24 assists and 12 double-figure returns. His performances improved after Michael Carrick moved Manchester United into a 4-2-3-1 formation and used Bruno in a more advanced role.
Why captain Bruno?
Manchester United visit newly promoted Hull before hosting Ipswich in Gameweek 2. That gives Bruno one of the strongest opening fixture combinations.
Unlike Haaland, Bruno can collect points through several routes:
Goals
Assists
Penalties
Corners and free-kicks
Midfielder clean-sheet points
Bonus points
Defensive contributions
He also costs £3.5m less than Haaland. That saving can improve several other positions in your squad.
Bruno is not automatically safer for Gameweek 1, however. He also participated in the World Cup, although Portugal’s earlier elimination should give him more time to prepare than players who reached the final stages.
If Bruno starts Manchester United’s final friendly and retains penalties, he will be the strongest alternative captain.
Cole Palmer: £9.5m
Palmer has dropped to £9.5m after scoring 114 points last season.
That total was disappointing, but he had produced more than 200 points in each of the previous two campaigns. His lower price makes him an attractive premium midfielder for managers who want to spread money across the squad.

A much lower price
Greater squad flexibility
Unlike Haaland and Bruno, Palmer was not part of England’s World Cup squad. That should allow him to complete a fuller pre-season with Chelsea.
His Gameweek 1 fixture is the main concern. Fulham away is respectable, but it is less attractive than Haaland at home or Bruno against promoted opposition.
Palmer is therefore more appealing as a squad pick or vice-captain than as the default Gameweek 1 captain.

Does Haaland justify the extra money?
Haaland and Bruno together cost £27.5m, leaving £72.5m for the other 13 members of your squad.
That combination is possible, but it may require:
Minimum-price defenders
A cheap goalkeeper
A weaker bench
At least one budget attacker
Managers going without Haaland can build a more balanced squad. However, they also risk falling behind quickly if he produces a major captaincy return.
The decision should compare complete squads, not only individual players.

Haaland’s home fixture and unmatched scoring ceiling make him the early favourite.
Bruno offers the best alternative, particularly for managers who prefer the stronger overall squad created by saving £3.5m.
Palmer remains an attractive premium option, but Fulham away places him behind the other two for the opening captaincy.
The final decision should be made after the last friendlies and press conferences. Until then, Haaland is the leading Gameweek 1 captain when confirmed fit and ready to start.
