FPL own goals and assists explained: when are points awarded?
Fantasy Premier League own goals and assists do not always follow the informal language used by commentators. A deflected shot might be credited as an own goal, while the attacking player's FPL assist can depend on the official assist definition and the review process. Do not promise an assist or an FPL points correction before the official decision.
Three separate decisions
| Decision | Decided through | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Official goalscorer | The competition's match-event record | Scorer or own goal designation |
| FPL assist | Official FPL assist rules and reviews | Whether the attacking action meets the assist criteria |
| Bonus points | BPS calculations | Provisional during play, final after review |
The player originally credited with a shot may not receive the goal if the deciding touch makes it an own goal. Whether a related Fantasy assist is awarded requires applying the separate FPL rules; it is not automatic for every own goal.

GW8 example: Liverpool versus Brighton
Liverpool beat Brighton 2–0, with a first-half own goal credited to Pascal Groß and another goal scored by Alexander Isak. The event generated discussion about the earlier attacking contribution. The right practice for OneFPL is to describe the recorded own goal and cite the final Fantasy assist decision only when it is settled—not manufacture a disputed award for a headline.
When can FPL points change?
Assists, BPS and defensive contribution data can be reviewed until the 09:00 UK Gameweek lock on the morning after the final match. A live bonus display may therefore differ from the final score. Rare exceptional adjustments can be addressed by the official game, but normally the locked result stands.
Can an own goal be negative points?
Yes. An own goal carries the scoring deduction under FPL rules. A defender can also lose clean-sheet points if their side concedes. The entire individual FPL points tally combines scoring categories and deductions.
Practical advice for live leagues
Use the OneFPL Live Table as a provisional explanation of rank movement, then check the locked official score. Avoid making a transfer solely because a disputed live assist temporarily changed bonus allocations.
