What happens if your FPL captain doesn't start or doesn't play?
If your captain plays zero minutes in a Gameweek, your vice-captain receives the captaincy multiplier—provided the vice plays. If your captain plays even one minute, the captain remains captain. Being left out of the starting XI is not the same as failing to appear at all.

What if neither captain nor vice plays?
The normal captain bonus does not automatically pass to the next highest scorer. You miss out on the multiplier if both fail to feature. Substitute rules may replace an absent starting player, but they do not invent a new captain selection.
Does a one-point cameo change the answer?
Yes. A captain who enters as a substitute and records any minutes keeps the armband. If they receive one point, the captain multiplier applies to that score. Your vice-captain's big haul does not replace the small captain return.
What about negative captain points?
The multiplier applies to the player's final score, including deductions. A captain sent off during a match has played; the vice-captain does not take over. This is different from a captain who was unavailable and never entered the pitch.
When will your league table show the change?
Live tools may predict vice-captain promotion during the Gameweek, but official points are confirmed at the 2026/27 final lock—09:00 UK time on the day after the Gameweek's last match. To follow provisional movement, visit OneFPL Live Table.
How to choose a vice-captain
Pick a second player with a reliable starting role and strong expected points rather than simply a high-upside player who is also a doubt. The vice exists to insure against a zero-minute absence.
Captain and vice-captain example
You captain Player A and vice-captain Player B. If A stays on the bench for the entire Gameweek and B scores six points, B becomes the captain and is normally doubled to twelve. If A instead comes on for one minute and scores one point, A remains captain with a doubled two-point return; B's six points are counted just once. The two outcomes are very different even though A was not in the starting XI for most of the match.
When to be most careful
Rotation-heavy midweeks, Europa/Champions League fixtures and late fitness tests raise the chance of uncertain starts. If your chosen captain may be rested but used late, the vice-captain protection is weaker than it looks. Check manager comments and the probable starting role before committing to a differential armband.
