FPL automatic substitutions: how bench order works in 2026/27
An automatic substitution can replace a starting player who plays zero minutes in a Gameweek, provided the replacement appeared and the resulting team has a legal formation. Simply scoring zero points is not enough: a player who appears, even briefly, remains part of your starting XI.

Example: 3-4-3 with an absent forward
You start three defenders, four midfielders and three forwards. One forward does not feature. If your first bench player is a defender who played, a substitution can make the result a valid 4-4-2. If a change would produce an illegal formation, FPL checks later bench players until it finds an eligible option. There must still be at least three defenders, two midfielders and one forward.
What if your captain does not play?
A captain who plays zero minutes can be replaced for captaincy purposes by the vice-captain if the vice features. If the captain plays for even a minute, they keep the armband and any points or negative points. See What happens when your FPL captain does not play.
When are substitutions final?
During live matches, FPL and OneFPL can show predicted substitutes. The official 2026/27 Gameweek lock is 09:00 UK time on the day after the final match. Treat early predicted points, provisional bonus and pending substitutions as subject to review.

Example: why bench order changes your final points
Suppose your starting midfielder does not feature. Your first bench outfielder played 90 minutes and collected two points; your second bench player scored six. If the first substitute can enter while maintaining a legal formation, the first substitute is the one counted—not necessarily the highest scorer on the bench. Putting your preferred substitute first is therefore a real decision.
The 60-minute distinction
A starter replaced after 59 recorded minutes still appeared, so the substitution rule will not replace them. The fact that they might lose eligibility for clean-sheet points because they did not complete 60 official minutes does not turn their appearance into a zero-minute absence.
Before every deadline, verify the full 15-player bench order alongside your captain and vice-captain. Changing it after the deadline cannot change the locked Gameweek.
