An FPL automatic substitution happens when a player in your starting XI plays zero minutes in the Gameweek. FPL then uses your bench order, but the replacement must keep a valid formation.

For example, if you start only three defenders and one does not play, an outfield midfielder cannot replace him. FPL needs an eligible defender from your bench.
Why bench order matters
The first outfield substitute is normally your best emergency replacement. Consider:
Expected minutes
Fixture
Attacking or clean-sheet potential
Whether the player preserves your formation
A cheap player who is unlikely to start is a poor first substitute even if his fixture looks easy.
When are auto-subs confirmed?
They can be predicted during the Gameweek, but official substitutions are settled when the Gameweek is finalised. In 2026/27, final points lock at 09:00 UK time on the day after the last match.
