SEARCH-INTENT UPDATE — 7 October 2026. This page should now target the manager question “Who is due a goal or assist in GW6?” rather than only the technical term “underperformers.”
The useful process is unchanged:
shots + box shots + big chances + xG/xA + expected minutes + fixture.
Do not say a player is guaranteed to return because he has underperformed xG.
Current names worth rechecking include:
- Barry — chance volume stronger than goals;
- Gonzalo Garcia — central chances + strong Fulham fixtures;
- Mbeumo-type profiles where assist/goal process is better than recent FPL scores;
- creative midfielders whose xA is ahead of assists.

Data snapshot after Gameweek 5, updated 26 September 2026. Expected-goal models can differ slightly by provider, so focus on the pattern rather than treating hundredths of xG as exact truth.
FPL managers naturally chase points. The more useful question is often: who is getting the chances before the points arrive?
After five Gameweeks, several players have underlying attacking numbers that are stronger than their current FPL returns. That does not mean they are "due" a goal next match. It means the process is worth investigating.
Underperformers to watch for GW6
| Player | Underlying signal | Actual-output issue | FPL action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thierno Barry | ~3.5 xG | Only two goals | BUYABLE |
| Gonzalo Garcia | ~2.4-2.5 xG | Goal output trails chances | WATCH / BUY |
| Bryan Mbeumo | Strong xG + xA profile | Assists lag creation | HOLD / BUYABLE |
| Dominik Szoboszlai | ~1.6 xA in one model | Zero assists | WATCH |
| Martin Ødegaard | ~1.5 xA in one model | Zero assists | WATCH |
| Bukayo Saka | Strong xG + creation | Assist return can improve | STRONG |
| Ollie McBurnie | Around 2.0 xG in one model | No goals | ROLE CHECK FIRST |
The goal is not to tell you to buy seven players. It is to find where performance and FPL points have separated.
Thierno Barry — chances are stronger than the scoreline
Premier League data puts Barry around 3.5 expected goals after five Gameweeks. He has scored fewer actual goals than that chance quality would suggest.
The key point is Everton are continuing to create high-quality opportunities for him. That is more encouraging than a forward scoring twice from two low-probability shots.

Gonzalo Garcia — fixture swing meets positive xG
Garcia has generated roughly 2.4–2.5 xG but has not converted that volume into equivalent goals.
Fantasy Football Scout's current Fulham analysis also notes his high central-shot volume while highlighting inefficient finishing.
Bull case
- central role;
- high shot volume;
- Fulham rank well for box attempts;
- Ipswich, Hull and Coventry next;
- £6.0m price.
Bear case
- finishing has genuinely been weak;
- xG underperformance does not guarantee correction;
- other budget forwards may be more clinical.

Bryan Mbeumo — assists are the interesting part
Mbeumo already has attacking returns. The underperformance angle is more specific.
Expected-assist models have him around 1.6 xA, while his actual assist count has lagged. His goal threat is also strong: Premier League data has placed him among the leading midfielders for expected goals and big chances.
That tells us his role remains productive even when recent FPL scores are quiet.

Szoboszlai — creativity without assist return
Some xA models put Dominik Szoboszlai around 1.6 expected assists through GW5, yet the assist total remains at zero.
That does not make him an automatic transfer. Liverpool rotation and role competition still matter.
Combine xA with chances created, set pieces, expected minutes and fixtures.
Ødegaard — creation can regress positively
Martin Ødegaard is another player whose expected assists are ahead of actual assists.
If he continues to play advanced minutes around Saka and Arsenal's central attackers, chance creation can eventually turn into points. If his minutes are managed or the role becomes deeper, xA alone is not enough.
Saka — strong process even before a perfect scoreline
Saka is not a classic failed asset. He has already scored.
But the combination of roughly 3.2 xG, strong big-chance numbers, 12 box shots and current penalty responsibility gives him more routes to future returns than raw points alone show.
That is why he is also in the GW6 Captaincy conversation.
McBurnie — danger of blindly following xG
Some datasets put McBurnie around 2.0 xG with no goals. That looks like a regression candidate.
Before buying, check starts, minutes, role, fixtures and whether better value exists at the same price. An xG number cannot rescue a bad minutes profile.
Underperformance vs bad finishing
There are three explanations when goals trail xG:
- variance;
- finishing weakness;
- small-sample noise.
Usually, five Gameweeks are not enough to know which dominates.
That is why "due a goal" should never be written as certainty.
xA underperformance is even noisier
A midfielder can repeatedly create excellent chances and receive zero assists because team-mates miss them.
That can make strong xA plus secure minutes especially useful for identifying future value.
How to use this for transfers
Do not ask who is due?
Ask who has a repeatable role that should keep creating the same chances?
Use:
- starts;
- minutes;
- role;
- xG/xA;
- big chances;
- shots in box;
- set pieces;
- fixtures;
- injury/rotation risk.
Then compare in Player Lab.
Overperformers matter too
The opposite problem is a player whose FPL returns are running ahead of the chances.
That does not automatically mean sell. Pascal Groß is the best early-season example because penalties, set pieces and secure role can help sustain strong output.

OneFPL verdict
The most useful GW6 underperformer names are players where role and fixtures support the data.
Barry and Garcia stand out in the budget-forward bracket. Mbeumo remains stronger than recent blank scores suggest. Saka has a premium-level process and excellent GW6 fixture.
Players like Szoboszlai, Ødegaard and McBurnie need a stronger role/minutes check before becoming transfers.
FAQ
What does FPL underperformer mean?
It usually means a player's goals or assists are below the quality and volume of chances represented by xG and xA. It does not guarantee an imminent return.
Who is underperforming xG among budget forwards?
Thierno Barry and Gonzalo Garcia are useful examples: both have generated stronger expected-goal numbers than their actual goal totals suggest.
Is Mbeumo underperforming?
His chance creation and expected-assist numbers are stronger than his assist total, while his goal threat remains high. That keeps him interesting despite recent blanks.
Should I buy every player with high xG?
No. Minutes, role, fixtures, finishing ability, injury status and team strength still matter. xG is evidence, not a guarantee.
How often should this article be updated?
Weekly. The strongest version is a recurring OneFPL data article that refreshes xG, xA, minutes and fixtures after every Gameweek.
