The short answer
Bryan Mbeumo currently has the stronger Gameweek 1 case than Matheus Cunha.
Both cost £8.0m, but official FPL's 12 August Scout Selection says Mbeumo has the current edge for form and fitness.

Why Mbeumo leads
Mbeumo scored twice against Atletico Madrid and then against PSG, giving him three goals across two friendlies. United also used him centrally, while he took dangerous direct free-kicks against PSG.
Cunha's route
Cunha remains relevant. Official FPL notes that if Benjamin Sesko is unavailable, Cunha could be used up front, as happened when Sesko was sidelined late last season.
What about penalties?
Do not select either expecting first-choice penalties over Bruno Fernandes. Mbeumo took a pre-season penalty against Atletico, but that does not establish the competitive hierarchy when Bruno is on the pitch.
