Haaland Triple Captain GW3 Result: Was the Chip Worth It?

Gameweek 3 produced one of the biggest early-season chip events in FPL history.

The Premier League reported that more than 1.7 million managers activated Triple Captain, with the overwhelming majority backing Erling Haaland at home to Coventry.

Haaland scored the winner in Manchester City's 1-0 victory — a return, but not the multi-goal explosion many chip users were targeting.

The short answer

The decision can still have been reasonable even when the outcome was only moderate.

Triple Captain is a probability decision. Haaland had the fixture, role and scoring potential to justify consideration. One goal is not proof the process was wrong, just as a hat-trick would not prove it was the only correct strategy.

Why so many managers used the chip

The case was obvious:

• Haaland was City's secure central goal threat.
• Coventry were newly promoted.
• City were at home.
• Haaland had already started the season strongly.
• FPL's first-half chip structure encourages managers to find opportunities earlier than they might have in old seasons.

That combination produced record chip usage.

What actually happened?

Haaland scored the only goal of the match.

City controlled large periods but did not turn the fixture into the high-scoring game Triple Captain managers wanted.

The result illustrates the unavoidable variance in single-match chips: even an excellent captaincy fixture can finish with one attacking return.

Was using Triple Captain a mistake?

Not automatically.

The right way to assess a chip is:

1. Was the player likely to start?
2. Was he central to penalties and goals?
3. Was the fixture unusually strong?
4. Were there clearly better future opportunities within the chip window?
5. Did your own team need another chip more urgently?

If Haaland passed those checks for your squad, the decision was defensible even without a huge haul.

What should managers who saved it do?

Do not play Triple Captain in GW4 simply because Haaland's result created fear of missing out.
