Matty Cash FPL GW10: suspend, bench or replace?

Matty Cash is on the Premier League's official 1 November list of players suspended for Gameweek 10. Aston Villa face Manchester United away on Sunday 8 November. This is a one-gameweek ban, so a transfer is not automatically the best response: unlike Mateta's three-game absence, Cash can potentially return immediately after his suspension.

A good FPL response starts with your bench. Selling a defender with an otherwise useful fixture run can waste two transfers if you buy him back soon.

First ask: does your first substitute play?

If your first substitute is expected to start and has a reasonable fixture, benching Cash may preserve a valuable transfer. Review whether that substitute has played at least 60 minutes consistently and whether the fixture fits a likely clean sheet or defensive-contribution return.

If your entire bench is unavailable or you already have another suspended defender, the value of transferring Cash rises. You should also examine whether Cash is still wanted in your GW11–14 plans; selling him permanently is more attractive if Villa's upcoming fixtures are less useful than those of the replacement.

Arsenal: strongest fixture, highest opportunity cost

Arsenal have six league clean sheets from nine matches after beating Liverpool 1–0. Hull at home is attractive for GW10. Gabriel offers premium return routes; Calafiori offers lower-cost exposure with a greater need to verify tactical role and starts. Neither is a guaranteed clean sheet.

A move from Cash to Gabriel might require money that weakens your attack. A move to Calafiori may be easier, but check whether you are using your last Arsenal club slot. Our defender comparison gives an additional starting point.

Bournemouth: António Silva as a budget structure play

The Premier League's October 29 transfer radar highlights Silva's defensive-contribution points and Bournemouth's relatively favorable fixtures. After a GW9 win over Leeds, Bournemouth visit Ipswich in GW10. A defender who can earn bonus-type returns from defensive actions is worth considering even when clean sheets are uncertain.

However, a defender's defensive-contribution rate is not automatically guaranteed to repeat. Review his minutes, yellow cards, role and the alternative Bournemouth attackers you might eventually want.

Brighton and Tottenham: different types of upside

De Cuyper has played in advanced positions despite being classified as an FPL defender and remains attractive after Brighton's win at Manchester City. Spurs' Van Hecke delivered a spectacular GW9 score, but goals from defenders are rare enough that using a single haul as his expected output would be misleading.

The correct comparison is over several gameweeks: future fixtures, expected minutes, defensive points and the number of transfers required to keep your squad balanced.

When is a -4 points hit worthwhile?

If a fit defender on your bench is likely to score even two points, a hit to replace Cash effectively needs to improve on both that bench contribution and the four-point deduction to be worthwhile. Over future weeks, a permanent upgrade can still make sense, but quantify the gap and avoid pretending one attractive fixture guarantees an immediate payback.

Our verdict

Bench Cash if you have a dependable substitute and want him for GW11 onward. Transfer him if your squad is thin or you were already planning to change that position. Gabriel is the premium option, António Silva a value candidate, while Calafiori and De Cuyper require particularly close minutes checks.
