What is an out-of-position FPL defender?
An out-of-position defender is classified as a DEF in Fantasy but plays significantly higher on the pitch.
That matters because defenders receive:
- Six points per goal
- Four clean-sheet points
- Three points per assist
- Defensive-contribution points
A defender playing as a winger can therefore have an unusually high ceiling.
Best current OOP and advanced defenders
| Player | Price | Pre-season role | OOP level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rayan Aït-Nouri | £5.5m | Man City left wing | Very high |
| Trai Hume | £4.5m | Sunderland right wing vs Lens | Very high |
| Marco Palestra | £5.5m | Chelsea wing-back | High |
| Daniel Muñoz | £5.5m | Palace wing-back | High |
| Tyrick Mitchell | £4.5m | Palace wing-back | High |
The distinction is important: winger deployment is stronger OOP evidence than simply playing wing-back.
1. Rayan Aït-Nouri
Official FPL analysis says City have used Aït-Nouri on the left wing and he has scored twice.
At £5.5m, this is the strongest current upside if the role survives.
Risk: Manchester City rotation.
2. Trai Hume
The £4.5m Sunderland defender started on the right wing against Lens and scored.
That makes him cheaper than Aït-Nouri and potentially easier to fit into a Haaland-heavy squad.
Risk: the position may have been temporary.
3. Marco Palestra
Chelsea's back-three experiment pushed Palestra high at wing-back.
He does not need to be a literal winger to become valuable. Consistent final-third involvement plus Chelsea clean sheets could justify £5.5m.
Risk: squad depth and tactical rotation.
4. Crystal Palace wing-backs
Pierre Sage has used a back three in pre-season.
That keeps Daniel Muñoz and Tyrick Mitchell relevant because both can occupy advanced wide zones while retaining defender classification.
Their role is less extreme than Hume/Aït-Nouri, but potentially more sustainable.
What makes an OOP role trustworthy?
| Evidence | Weight |
|---|---|
| One friendly | Low |
| Multiple starts in same role | Medium |
| Strongest XI uses role | High |
| Manager explains role | High |
| GW1 competitive start | Very high |
Do not build a squad around a positional anomaly until it survives the final tests.
OneFPL verdict
Aït-Nouri has the highest ceiling. Hume has the most interesting price.
Palestra and the Palace wing-backs provide more conventional advanced-defender alternatives.
