The short answer
Midweek cup and European matches have given FPL managers far more useful information than another week of transfer rumours.
The biggest pre-GW2 lessons are:
- Thierno Barry is strengthening his claim to Everton's No.9 role.
- Sávio made an explosive Tottenham debut.
- Maxim De Cuyper scored again in Europe.
- Chelsea used several major FPL assets only days before Brighton.
- Fulham now have genuine Muniz vs García striker competition.
- Taiwo Awoniyi has forced his way into Coventry's GW2 conversation.
- Newcastle's new right-back Amar Dedić added attacking evidence.
Everton: Barry scores a hat-trick and gets an assist
Everton beat Preston 4-0.
Thierno Barry scored three times and assisted Brennan Johnson's goal.
He had already scored in Everton's 2-0 Gameweek 1 win over Crystal Palace.
That gives Barry four goals in his first two competitive matches of the season, with two consecutive starts.
This is much stronger evidence than preseason speculation about Barry versus Beto.
FPL verdict: major budget-forward upgrade.

Tottenham: Sávio scores and assists on debut
Tottenham beat Charlton 5-1.
Sávio entered as a second-half substitute and made an immediate impact with a goal and an assist in a short cameo.
Dominic Solanke also scored.
The FPL picture became more complicated a day later because Tottenham then confirmed Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.
Spurs now have more attacking upside — and more competition for minutes.

Brighton: De Cuyper scores again in Europe
Brighton beat Tromsø 4-0 to reach the UEFA Conference League league phase.
Maxim De Cuyper scored again.
That adds to:
- his GW1 Premier League goal
- his £0.1m FPL price rise
- the evidence that his advanced role can produce real attacking returns
The caveat is schedule.
Brighton played on Thursday and travel to Chelsea on Sunday, creating a short recovery window.
Brighton have also signed left-back Jaouen Hadjam and will now play at least six Conference League league-phase matches.
FPL verdict: attacking role confirmed; long-term rotation risk increases.
Chelsea: Palmer, Rogers and James get cup minutes
Chelsea beat Luton 2-0.
Xabi Alonso selected a stronger team than many FPL managers might have expected, with Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Reece James starting.
Danny Welbeck scored from a Malo Gusto cross.
Mike Penders started in goal and kept a clean sheet, while João Pedro appeared from the bench.
The immediate FPL question is recovery before Brighton rather than whether Palmer remains Chelsea's best premium attacker.
FPL verdict: monitor minutes, especially for defenders and wide players.
Fulham: Muniz and García both score
Fulham made 10 changes and beat AFC Wimbledon 3-0.
Rodrigo Muniz scored, and Gonzalo García came off the bench to score again after also netting against Chelsea in GW1.
This creates a real striker-hierarchy question.
FPL verdict: García's stock is rising, but Muniz remains direct competition.
Coventry: Awoniyi forces himself into the GW2 debate
Coventry beat Plymouth 4-2.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored and assisted after appearing from the bench in GW1.
Coventry host Hull in Gameweek 2, while promoted-club players score double in the Welcome Back FPL Challenge.
Awoniyi's cup performance therefore matters in both normal FPL expected-minutes projections and Challenge.
FPL verdict: major predicted-lineup update required.
Ipswich: rotation still produces goals
Ipswich beat Leicester 3-1, with Sindre Walle opening the scoring and Marcelino Núñez scoring twice.
Ipswich used a changed side, so managers should not treat every cup scorer as a likely Premier League starter.
The cup is most useful as evidence about squad depth and who is pushing for league minutes.
Newcastle: Dedić's attacking role
Newcastle beat West Brom 3-2.
Amar Dedić supplied assists as Newcastle came from behind, while Harvey Barnes scored twice as a substitute.
That is relevant for a £4.5m defender because assists can make a cheap route much more interesting if league starts follow.
Third-round congestion is coming
The next round includes:
- Liverpool vs Tottenham
- Manchester United vs Brighton
- Ipswich vs Arsenal
- Coventry vs Aston Villa
- Manchester City vs Norwich
- Sunderland vs Hull
- Chelsea vs Leeds
- West Ham vs Fulham
Ties will be played across the weeks beginning 7 and 14 September, overlapping with the start of UEFA competition schedules.
This is where cup minutes start becoming a genuine FPL rotation variable.

The biggest upgrades are Barry, De Cuyper and Sávio.
The biggest minutes questions are Tottenham's attack, Fulham's striker role, Coventry's forward line and Brighton's left side.
Use cup matches as evidence, not as FPL points. The important output is a better estimate of who starts in the Premier League.
