How Defensive Contribution points work
In 2026/27:
- Defenders earn two FPL points when they reach 10 qualifying defensive contributions.
- Midfielders and forwards require 12.
- Midfielders and forwards also benefit from recoveries in their qualifying total.
FPL now waits until 09:00 UK on the day after the final match of the Gameweek before locking points, allowing Opta's post-match review to feed into both BPS and DefCon scoring.

Sangaré's Gameweek 1 was exactly why DefCon matters in FPL.

Coventry's Bobby Thomas reached exactly 10 defensive contributions.
For cheap defenders, this matters because two DefCon points can partially protect a score even when a clean sheet disappears.
The ideal budget defender combines:
- secure starts
- 90 minutes
- DefCon activity
- occasional attacking threat
Premium defenders can benefit too
Van Dijk reaching the threshold shows DefCon is not only a budget-player tool.
A premium centre-back can combine:
- clean sheets
- set-piece threat
- bonus
- DefCon
That creates a much stronger ceiling than simply relying on four clean-sheet points.
Do not chase a single DefCon hit
Before transferring in a player because he earned +2 in GW1, check:
- Did he play close to 90 minutes?
- Is his starting place secure?
