The short answer
Brentford produced one of Gameweek 1's biggest statements, beating Tottenham 3-0.
Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode scored, Caoimhín Kelleher kept a clean sheet and new £5.5m midfielder Mamadou Sangaré was one of the game's standout players.
The Guardian's live data had Tottenham at roughly 0.47 xG compared with Brentford's 3.96.
FPL points snapshot
These are the safest base FPL points before bonus, defensive-contribution points, goalkeeper save points and any official assist adjustments.
| Player | Price | Return | Base FPL points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michael Kayode | £4.5m DEF | Goal + clean sheet | 12 |
| Keane Lewis-Potter | £5.5m MID | Goal + clean sheet | 8 |
| Vitaly Janelt | £5.0m MID | Goal + clean sheet | 8 |
| Caoimhín Kelleher | £5.0m GK | Clean sheet | 6+ |
| Mamadou Sangaré | £5.5m MID | Major creative involvement + clean sheet | Check final official total |
| Igor Thiago | £8.0m FWD | Missed penalty | -2 for the miss |
Match reports credited Sangaré with major creative involvement. The Guardian credited two assists in its live report, while Reuters explicitly credited him with the second-goal assist. Official FPL assist attribution can differ, so use the final FPL total for the definitive Fantasy score.
1. Kayode produced the standout defender return
A defender goal is worth six FPL points. Add two appearance points and four clean-sheet points and Kayode reaches 12 base points before bonus or defensive contributions.
At £4.5m, that makes him immediately interesting. The real question is whether his advanced role and Brentford's defensive structure are repeatable.
2. Sangaré's preseason thesis now has competitive evidence
OneFPL's original Sangaré article asked whether his Ligue 1 defensive-action numbers could translate to the Premier League.
His debut supplied the first positive competitive evidence. He was central to Brentford's midfield dominance and repeatedly helped progress attacks.
Read the updated Mamadou Sangaré FPL guide.
3. Lewis-Potter is a £5.5m differential worth monitoring
Lewis-Potter started on the left and scored. A midfielder goal plus clean sheet and appearance gives him eight base FPL points before bonus/DC.
At the same £5.5m price as Sangaré, he offers the more direct attacking route while Sangaré may provide the stronger defensive-contribution floor.
4. Kelleher confirms the defensive route
Kelleher starts from six base points for appearance plus clean sheet, before saves and bonus.
He was already FPL's second-highest-scoring goalkeeper last season according to Brentford's official price reveal, so this result is confirmation rather than a random breakout.
5. Igor Thiago appears to be Brentford's penalty taker
Thiago took Brentford's penalty with the main attackers on the pitch and hit the post.
The miss hurts his match score, but the bigger information is who took it.
That should immediately be reflected in the OneFPL penalty and set-piece tracker.
6. Spurs' defence was a major warning
Tottenham conceded three and Brentford could have scored more.
Kinsky's £4.5m price remains attractive, but this match weakens the assumption that Spurs automatically provide a bargain defensive route under Roberto De Zerbi.
The absences of Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven matter, so do not assume this exact defensive level will persist.
7. Spurs attack: wait for evidence
Richarlison started centrally but Spurs created very little.
De Zerbi said after the game that Spurs are "not a team yet", pointing to fitness, integration and cohesion problems.

OneFPL verdict
Brentford assets rise sharply; Spurs assets move to wait-and-see.
The best evidence from the match is:
- Kayode has attacking upside at £4.5m.
- Sangaré's all-round role looks real.
- Kelleher remains a strong goalkeeper.
- Thiago appears to lead penalties.
- Spurs need more evidence before FPL investment.
