The short answer
Mamadou Sangaré could become one of the best DefCon midfielders at £5.5m.
Brentford signed the Mali international from Lens for a club-record fee, and official FPL analysis compared his profile with Elliot Anderson.
In 32 Ligue 1 starts last season, Sangaré produced three goals and four assists. More importantly, his defensive actions would have reached the FPL midfield DefCon threshold in 19 of those 32 starts, a 59.4 per cent success rate.
Sangaré's FPL profile
| Metric | 2025/26 league figure |
|---|---|
| Starts | 32 |
| Goals | 3 |
| Assists | 4 |
| Projected DefCon hits | 19 |
| DefCon success rate | 59.4% |
| FPL price | £5.5m |
Official FPL says that rate would have been bettered only by Elliot Anderson and Rodrigo Bentancur among relevant midfielders.
Why £5.5m changes the appeal
If Sangaré can frequently combine two appearance points, two defensive-contribution points and occasional attacking returns, he can provide a very useful floor.
That makes him particularly attractive as a fourth or fifth midfielder in premium-heavy squads.
Where Brentford are using him
Official pre-season analysis says Sangaré started at the base of midfield. That puts him near tackles, recoveries, interceptions, duels and second balls.
Can he really be the new Elliot Anderson?
The comparison should be handled carefully. Anderson scored 52 defensive-contribution points last season and also developed meaningful attacking involvement.
Sangaré still needs to prove Premier League minutes, Brentford role, defensive-action volume and enough attacking involvement.
Sangaré versus other budget mids
| Player | Price | Main FPL route |
|---|---|---|
| Sangaré | £5.5m | DefCon + all-round returns |
| Pascal Groß | £5.5m | Penalties and set pieces |
| Florentino | £5.0m | DefCon floor |
| Anton Stach | £6.0m | Goals, assists and DefCon |
OneFPL verdict
Sangaré is one of the best £5.5m DefCon watchlist midfielders.
