The short answer
FPL Safety Score is a community estimate of the points needed to roughly maintain your current rank or rank band.
It is not an official FPL statistic.
If your live score is above the estimated safety score, you are generally more likely to be on a green arrow. If below it, a red arrow becomes more likely.

This remains an estimate because live ranks continue changing.
Why does safety score move?
During a Gameweek:
- Popular captains return points
- Clean sheets are gained or lost
- Bonus changes
- Autosubs are projected
- Remaining players enter matches
- Effective ownership differs by rank band
All of that changes the score needed to hold position.
There is no universal formula
Different community tools can show slightly different safety scores.
Some use managers near your exact rank. Others use a wider sample or different assumptions around projected points.
That does not necessarily mean one is wrong.
Safety score vs Gameweek average

The overall average can be almost irrelevant if you are comparing yourself with managers around a much higher rank.
