The short answer
An FPL differential is a relatively low-owned player selected because their points can create larger rank gains.
It is a community term. FPL does not publish an official ownership percentage that defines a differential.
Common shorthand:

| Under 5% | Strong differential |
| Under 1% | Very low-owned punt |
These are guidelines, not rules.
Why low ownership matters
Imagine two midfielders both score eight points.
- Player A is owned by 50%
- Player B is owned by 3%
Player B normally creates a bigger rank gain for owners because fewer rivals receive the points.
That does not mean Player B was the better decision before the match.
A good differential still needs fundamentals
Choose a low-owned player because they have:
- Secure minutes
- Strong role
- Good fixtures
- Set pieces or penalties
- Useful underlying numbers
- Fair price
Do not select someone only because almost nobody owns them.
Differential vs Effective Ownership
Normal ownership counts how many teams own a player.
Effective Ownership also considers captaincy multipliers.
A low-owned captain can therefore create a much bigger swing than their normal ownership suggests.

When to take more risk
Early season
Use only a few differentials. Information is limited and the template protects against obvious mistakes.
Chasing a mini-league
Calculated differentials become more useful because copying the leader cannot close a large gap.
Leading a mini-league
You often need fewer risks. Popular high-EO players can protect position.
