The short answer
Gameweek Rank (GWR) measures how your score compares with other managers for one Gameweek.
Overall Rank (OR) measures your cumulative performance across the season.

Example
You start GW8 ranked 600,000th overall, score 90 points and finish with a GWR of 40,000.
That strong week can improve your OR significantly, but your new OR will not become 40,000 because the earlier seven Gameweeks still count.
What affects GWR?
Your Gameweek score after relevant deductions such as transfer hits, compared with the scores of other managers in that Gameweek.
What affects OR?
Every Gameweek combined, including captaincy, chips and transfer deductions.
Why can GWR look great but OR barely move?
Because managers around your current overall rank may also have scored well.
A strong weekly score can still create only a small green arrow if your rank rivals matched it.
Which rank matters more?
Overall Rank is the better season-performance measure.
Gameweek Rank tells you how unusual one weekly score was.
Do not chase GWR with reckless transfers.
