The short answer
Both Wildcard and Free Hit allow unlimited transfers.
The difference is what happens afterwards.
| Chip | Transfers | Squad after Gameweek |
|---|---|---|
| Wildcard | Unlimited and free | New squad stays |
| Free Hit | Unlimited and free | Previous squad returns |
Use Wildcard for long-term problems
Typical reasons:
- Several injuries
- Too many non-starters
- Major fixture swing
- Wrong team structure
- New value players have emerged
- You want a different squad for several weeks
Wildcard cannot be cancelled once activated, and banked free transfers are kept.
Use Free Hit for one difficult week
Typical reasons:
- Blank Gameweek
- Several poor fixtures
- One-week captaincy opportunity
- Double Gameweek you do not want to build toward
- Many expensive players face each other
Your original squad returns at the next deadline.
Example
You own three Arsenal and three Man City players. In GW12 Arsenal host City, but your squad looks excellent afterwards.
Free Hit: temporarily replace several of them.
Wildcard: usually excessive because the long-term squad is still good.
Decision table
| Problem | Better chip |
|---|---|
| One difficult Gameweek | Free Hit |
| 5+ long-term issues | Wildcard |
| Blank Gameweek | Usually Free Hit |
| Multiple injuries | Wildcard |
| Permanent fixture swing | Wildcard |
| One-week premium captain | Free Hit |
| Prepare Bench Boost | Wildcard can help |
Can you use both together?
No. Only one chip can be active per Gameweek.
