The short answer
The four FPL chips do not all interact with free transfers in the same way.
| Chip | Normal weekly transfer? | Previously banked transfers |
|---|---|---|
| Triple Captain | ✅ Normal rules apply | ✅ Kept |
| Bench Boost | ✅ Normal rules apply | ✅ Kept |
| Wildcard | Current Gameweek FT is used by chip | ✅ Kept |
| Free Hit | Current Gameweek FT is used by chip | ✅ Kept |
The maximum free-transfer bank is five.
Triple Captain
Triple Captain only changes your captain multiplier from double to triple.
It does not give unlimited transfers and does not remove your normal transfer.

Bench Boost
Bench Boost adds the points from all four substitutes to your Gameweek score.
Your transfers continue under the normal rules.
Wildcard
Wildcard gives you unlimited permanent transfers for that Gameweek.
The free transfer received for that Gameweek is used as part of the Wildcard, while previously banked transfers are retained for the following Gameweek.
Example: if you had three saved transfers before using the Wildcard, you still have three saved transfers afterwards.
Free Hit
Free Hit gives unlimited transfers for one Gameweek only.
Your old squad returns at the next deadline.
The current Gameweek's newly received transfer is used by the chip, while previously saved transfers are preserved.
Fantasy Football Scout also confirms that the old rule where saved transfers disappeared is no longer in effect.
Quick examples
1 FT + Triple Captain: use it or bank it normally.
3 FTs + Bench Boost: use any number normally or bank them.
3 saved FTs + Wildcard: unlimited transfers now; the three saved FTs return next Gameweek.
3 saved FTs + Free Hit: temporary unlimited transfers; the three saved FTs remain for next Gameweek.
OneFPL verdict
The easiest rule to remember:
Triple Captain and Bench Boost affect points. Wildcard and Free Hit affect transfers.
