The short answer
You do not choose an FPL formation from a dropdown.
Your formation changes automatically when you substitute players from different positions on the Pick Team page.
A valid starting XI must include:
- Exactly 1 goalkeeper
- At least 3 defenders
- At least 2 midfielders
- At least 1 forward
How to change formation
Example: changing 3-5-2 to 3-4-3.
- Open Pick Team.
- Select the midfielder you want to bench.
- Choose the substitute action.
- Select the forward on your bench.
- Complete the swap.
- Press Save My Team.
FPL changes the formation automatically.
Common valid formations
| Formation | DEF | MID | FWD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-4-3 | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| 3-5-2 | 3 | 5 | 2 |
| 4-3-3 | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| 4-4-2 | 4 | 4 | 2 |
| 4-5-1 | 4 | 5 | 1 |
| 5-2-3 | 5 | 2 | 3 |
| 5-3-2 | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| 5-4-1 | 5 | 4 | 1 |
Why won't FPL let me make a substitution?
The most common reason is that the new XI would break the minimum formation rules.
If you already start only three defenders, you cannot bench one for a midfielder because that would leave two defenders.
Auto-subs use the same rules
Your first bench player does not always enter. FPL skips a substitute if using them would create an invalid formation.

Which formation is best?
There is no universally best formation. Pick your best XI and let the formation follow.
