The short answer
Effective Ownership, or EO, combines normal ownership with captaincy exposure.
It is a community analytics metric, not an official FPL statistic.
Normal ownership asks how many managers own a player. EO asks how much effective scoring exposure those managers have after captain multipliers.
Simple example
Imagine 100 managers:
- 70 own Haaland
- 40 of those captain him
- 30 own but do not captain him
Effective copies:
- 30 normal owners = 30
- 40 captains count twice = 80
- Total = 110
EO = 110%
That is why effective ownership can exceed 100%.
Why your rank can fall when your player scores
Suppose you own a player but do not captain him.
If his EO around your rank is above 100%, managers around you effectively receive more of his points than you do.
You gain points, but they gain more.

What about Triple Captain?
Triple Captain increases the player's multiplier to three for that manager.
Community EO tools normally account for this, although exact calculations can vary around chips, autosubs and the comparison sample.
How should you use EO?
Leading a mini-league: high-EO players can reduce downside risk.
Chasing: lower-EO picks can create larger gains if they score.
Do not choose a poor player only because their EO is low.
