FPL Is Live for 2026/27: What to Do Before Gameweek 1
Fantasy Premier League is live for 2026/27. Here is the deadline, the new tools and a practical checklist for building your first draft without locking in too early.
Fantasy Premier League is officially live for the 2026/27 season.
Managers can now see every player price, build a 15-player squad and create or rejoin private mini-leagues. The first deadline is Friday 21 August 2026 at 18:30 BST, so there is time to experiment before any decision becomes final.
The biggest mistake at this stage is treating the first draft as the finished team. Prices, roles, injuries, transfers and pre-season minutes can all change the best squad structure before Gameweek 1.
Key launch details
Starting budget: £100.0m
Squad size: 15 players
Maximum players from one club: 3
Gameweek 1 deadline: Friday 21 August 2026 at 18:30 BST
Transfers before the first deadline: Unlimited
Player prices before the first deadline: Locked
Because prices are locked, there is no need to make early transfers to avoid a rise or fall. Use the launch period to test different combinations instead.
Step 1: Build several squad structures
Do not begin by choosing 15 favourite players.
Start with the biggest budget decision. For example:
Haaland plus one premium midfielder
Haaland plus two mid-priced midfielders
No Haaland with two premium midfielders and a stronger defence
One premium forward with a balanced starting eleven
Erling Haaland costs £15.5m, which is the highest starting price in FPL history. Bruno Fernandes costs £12.0m and Gabriel costs £8.0m. Those prices mean managers cannot select every premium name without accepting clear weaknesses elsewhere.
Use the OneFPL Transfer Planner to save multiple drafts and compare how each structure handles the opening fixtures.
Step 2: Focus on expected minutes
A good player is not a good FPL pick if his starting role is unclear.
During pre-season, track:
Starts
Total minutes
Position on the pitch
Set-piece responsibility
Penalty responsibility
Competition from new signings
Whether World Cup players return late
Manager comments about fitness and roles
A less exciting player with a secure 90-minute role is often a better Gameweek 1 pick than a more talented player who may start on the bench.
Step 3: Learn the new features
The official game now includes several tools that change how managers prepare and follow Gameweeks.
Assisted squad selection
New and returning managers can answer questions about club preference, bench strength and budget allocation. FPL then generates a squad based on those answers.
It is a useful starting point, but it is not an optimised prediction model. Review every generated squad before saving it. We explain the tool in full in our guide to the FPL assisted squad builder and Auto Pick.
Price Change Predictor
After the Gameweek 1 deadline, the official predictor will show progress towards price rises and falls. Data is expected to update every 15 minutes, with price changes taking place at 00:00 UK time. See our full guide to the FPL Price Change Predictor.
New squad views
Managers can switch views to see fixture difficulty, ownership, next opponent, form and price-change likelihood without leaving the main team pages.
Live ranks and projected bonus
Overall rank, mini-league positions and projected bonus points will update during matches.
Step 4: Use fixtures as a filter, not the only reason
Opening fixtures matter, but they should not override minutes, role and value.
A player with a favourable schedule is only useful if he starts and has realistic routes to points. Similarly, a strong long-term asset should not be ignored only because one difficult opponent appears in the first few Gameweeks.
Use the OneFPL Fixtures page to compare teams across the first six Gameweeks. Then test transfers in advance so the squad does not require an immediate hit.
Step 5: Plan the bench properly
Two sets of chips are available again in 2026/27, including a Bench Boost in each half of the season.
That does not mean every Gameweek 1 squad needs an expensive bench. Decide which approach fits the rest of your team:
Cheap bench with maximum money in the starting eleven
One reliable rotating defender
A playable eighth attacker
A deeper squad that can handle uncertain starters
Avoid spending extra money on substitutes who will almost never enter your team.
Step 6: Do not chase ownership blindly
High ownership can indicate a player has an obvious role, price or fixture advantage. It does not guarantee that he is the best pick.
Use ownership to understand risk, not to replace analysis. A highly owned captain can hurt rank when he scores, while a low-owned player can create upside. The right balance depends on your overall structure.
Gameweek 1 checklist
Before the deadline, confirm:
Every starter is expected to start.
Your captain has strong minutes and a suitable fixture.
Your vice-captain is also secure.
Your goalkeeper pairing is intentional.
At least one bench player is likely to play.
You are not relying on an unconfirmed transfer.
Your team can handle the next three to six Gameweeks.
You know which players are on penalties and major set pieces.
You have checked late injury and press-conference news.
You have saved at least one alternative draft.
FPL verdict
The game launching early enough to allow several weeks of planning is an advantage, but only if managers remain flexible.
Build structures now. Make final player decisions after pre-season roles, injuries and transfers become clearer.
